Roof vents include the crank-up vent/skylight, refrigerator vent, and plumbing vents. Most crank-ups fit into or over a 14" square opening this is the "nominal" size, the actual vent sizes vary slightly but most are approximately 15 /12" square on the outside. There are or have been several brands, the most common in current use being Ventline, Jensen, and Elixir. Some tent campers have a 9" square vent.

The easiest method of identification is the hinge style.

Ventline features a sheet metal hinge with a bendable tab at each end.

Jensen has a "piano" style hinge with a screw in each end which are removed to take out the hinge pin. Jensen also has a newer model that uses no pin.

Elixir vent hinges consist of a tubular extruded aluminum shape with a slot and a screw in each end which when removed allows the vent cover to slide off the mating surface.

Ventline Roof Vent
Translucent plastic dome, with metal framed base, removable screen. Fits standard 14" square opening. Order inside trim ring separately for up to 4" roof thickness. The photo, above right, shows the hinge style, which has a metal tab on each end, which is bent to keep the vent in its mating track. Available in white or smoke.

Ventline has discontinued the V2012-1 vents w/the square cornered screen frame and trim ring. Vents and trims are limited to quantity on hand.The vents that replace these (V2092-1) have a radius corner screen frame and trim ring. We are told that the radius trim ring will work with the square corner screen frame. Note that from the roof flange up, these vents are identical. The difference is in the screen and frame.

Top Jensen roof vents
Injection molded plastic roof vent, removable screen, fits standard 14" square opening, trim ring fits up to 3 1/2" thick roof. Available with both plastic or metal frame with radius corners and white covers. The Jensen vent in most common use has a piano style hinge.

Roof vent notes:

The condition of roof vent covers should be checked annually, covers that have a dull lifeless look should be replaced, when this point is reached they are generally quite brittle. A cover in good condition usually has a shiny appearance. Plastic framed roof vents should be inspected carefully for cracks in the frame, both on the roof and from inside, with the inside trim ring removed. If any cracks are observed the vent should be replaced.
